Strategic Research Programme 2026-2029

The overall objective of the Achucarro Basque Center for Neuroscience is to contribute to a future where cutting-edge neuroscience actively fosters social and economic sustainability, unlocking the complexity of the human brain to benefit society.

To attain this goal, we pursue pioneering frontier research in neuroscience, translate discoveries into real-world impact, and train the next generation of neuroscientists in the Basque Country.

Building on our foundational focus on neuro-glia interactions, the strategic 2026-29 research plan is based on the 3 core programmes:

  1. Neuro-Glial interactions in brain diseases
  2. Glial modulation of brain structure and function
  3. Glio-prosthetics

To develop 3 new transversal research lines on:

  1. Neurodegenerative diseases
  2. Mental Health, and
  3. Neuro-glia technology

Strengthening collaboration through this research grid will be key for achieving our scientific and societal objectives

This research programmes is aligned with the objectives and principles that inspired the Declaration of the European Dana Alliance for the Brain, that we endorse and commit to.
