Achucarro International Glia School 2026: Exploring Frontier Research in Glial Cell Biology
A three-day immersive gathering featuring leading global experts, career development roundtables, and technical mentoring in Plentzia.
The upcoming edition of the Achucarro International Glia School 2026 is taking place from September 16 to 18, 2026, at the Marine Station of Plentzia (PIE Plentzia – EHU).
Under the overarching theme “Frontier Research in Glial Cell Biology,” the event brings together international experts, early-career researchers, and principal investigators to examine the crucial roles glial cells play in brain development, neural circuit function, and neurodegenerative disorders.
The 2026 edition features four focused scientific sessions:
Understanding Glial Cells (Cellular Breakthroughs): Cellular mechanisms including microglial phagocytosis, astrocytic mitochondria in cognition, and oligodendrocyte signaling, concluded with a dedicated scientific career development round table.
Glial Cells in Neurodegeneration (Metabolic Insights): Fresh research into oxygen metabolism in microglia, astrocytic metabolic alterations in Alzheimer’s disease, and myelin regeneration strategies for Multiple Sclerosis.
Integrative Functions in Neural Circuit Physiology: How glia modulate early brain development, synaptic transmission, engram formation, and sensory circuit function.
Innovative Experimental Approaches: Breakthrough technologies including human iPSC and organoid models, zebrafish imaging, two-photon imaging, and microglial transcriptomics.
