Girls and boys between 12 and 16 years old in Bizilabe Bilbao have exhibited at Bilbao Arena a total of 17 projects against eleven professional women in the sector in an initiative that aims to promote vocations in the Stem field, especially among female students.
Dr. Elena Alberdi is currently Assistant Scientific Director and Principal Investigator at ACHUCARRO.
The choice of eleven professional women to exchange experiences with the girls and boys of Bizilabe Bilbao responds to a need reflected in the STEM and the youth of the town held in 2020 by the City of Bilbao and Elhuyar. In this report it was found that the girls had a lower scientific-technological vocation than the boys. Among the factors that feed this trend are gender stereotypes, which influence both interest in issues related to the STEM field and in the choice of professions. Thus, while the boys opt for those linked to technology, girls do it in greater numbers for teaching and health sciences. With the generation of female referents in the science and the field of technology for young students it is intended to contribute to reverse this drift.
