Two-photon microscopy enables high-resolution, three-dimensional imaging of intact neural circuits deep within living brain tissue. By utilizing longer-wavelength, near-infrared light that penetrates up to a millimeter into light-scattering tissue, it restricts fluorescent excitation strictly to a tight focal volume, vastly reducing phototoxicity and photobleaching outside the focal plane.
