Predoctoral position (R1) in Neddylation in Glia in Health and Disease

The Laboratory of Glial Cell Biology in Health and Disease is seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic predoctoral researcher passionate about science, and willing to learn, to join our research team to study the role of neddylation in glial cell biology, with a focus on both physiological processes and pathological conditions of the central nervous system. The successful candidate will investigate how the post-translational modification neddylation regulates glial cell function, and how its dysregulation contributes to neurological diseases such as multiple sclerosis. The successful candidate will join the research group under the supervision of Dr. Izaskun Buendia Abaitua and enroll in the PhD program in Neuroscience at the University of the Basque Country (EHU). Profile for this position

Glial cells, including astrocytes, microglia, and oligodendrocytes, are essential for maintaining brain homeostasis and supporting neuronal function. Emerging evidence suggests that post-translational modifications, such as neddylation—the conjugation of the ubiquitin-like protein NEDD8 to target proteins—play pivotal roles in modulating glial responses. This project will combine in vitro and in vivo approaches, using advanced techniques such as Molecular and cell biology methods, Virus-based gene editing, Transcriptomics and proteomics, Confocal and live-cell imaging, Mouse models of multiple sclerosis, and human samples. The selected candidate will benefit from close mentorship within a dynamic, interdisciplinary team and have access to state-of-the-art research facilities.

Contract

This fully funded 4-year predoctoral contract (EPIF) offers an exciting opportunity to work at the interface of molecular neurobiology, cell signaling, and translational neuroscience.

Elegibility

A Master’s degree (or equivalent) in Neuroscience, Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, Biochemistry, or a related discipline
A strong interest in glial biology and neurological disorders
Good communication skills and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team

Previous experience with molecular biology and cell culture techniques will be positively considered.
