From Aversive Experience to Trauma:Ā The Laboratory of Brain Circuits of Emotion offers a position for highly motivated researchers interested in pursuing a PhD in neuroscience, focused on elucidating the brain circuits underlying the development of phobias, panic attacks, and post-traumatic stress disorder following aversive experiences.

The selected candidate will carry out their thesis at Achucarro Basque Center for Neuroscience, a research-dedicated institute equipped with state-of-the-art neurobiology facilities and affiliated with the University of the Basque Country (EHU). The project will be conducted under the supervision of Dr. Joaquin Piriz and Dr. Edgar Soria-Gómez.
The research will combine behavioral analysis, gene delivery approaches, intersectional anatomical tracing, electrophysiology, and the recording and manipulation of brain activity using optogenetics. The overall aim is to advance the understanding of the neural circuits underlying fear generalization.
Contract
The position is initially funded for one year, renewable for a maximun of two, and funded by project PID 2024-160818NB-I00. The candidate will be expected to apply for predoctoral (R1) fellowships from the Basque Government, EHU, the Spanish Ministry of Education (FPU), or private foundations.
Elegibility
- Degree in Biomedical Sciences, Life Sciences, or related fields
- Strong academic record (minimum average grade of 7.5/10 or equivalent)
- Previous experience in neuroscience will be considered an asset
- Eligibility to apply for competitive predoctoral (R1) fellowships (Basque Government, UPV/EHU, FPU, or equivalent) will be considered an asset
