Dr. Abiega obtained her PhD in Neurosciences in 2017 at the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU). Her predoctoral research focused on studying the dynamics of microglial phagocytosis of apoptotic cells in different pathologies, focusing on the mechanisms and consequences of microglial phagocytosis impairment in the epileptic hippocampus. She did her first postdoc at the University of Amsterdam, and since 2022 she is working at Achucarro in the lab of Prof. Juan M. Encinas. During her postdoctoral time Dr. Abiega has continued studying the epileptic hippocampus, now focusing on unraveling the molecular changes driving the pathological transformation of stem cells and newborn neurons in epilepsy.
