The Ikerbasque Foundation recognizes Amanda Sierra Saavedra with the 2022 Consolidator Award for leading researchers in their fields of research

27 Sep 2022

This recognition, awarded annually by the Department of Education of the Basque Government and Ikerbasque, represents an award for the researcher, and above all an element that contributes to making women researchers in the Basque Country and their work visible, so that they serve as an example to young people of our territory.

In May 2022, the Ikerbasque Evaluation Committee in charge of awarding recognition to women researchers in the Basque Country unanimously agreed to award this year’s distinctions to researchers Jasone Cenoz Iragui, Amanda Sierra Saavedra and Marta Olazabal Salgado, in each of the three levels at which they are awarded.

In the case of Dr. Sierra Saavedra, she is awarded the “Consolidator” award, which distinguishes a leading researcher in her field of research. Amanda Sierra has directed the glial cell biology laboratory at the Achucarro Basque Center for Neuroscience since 2012. Her field of work is the mechanisms of brain regeneration in response to various neurodegenerative diseases, and specifically in the brain’s self-cleaning system that allows dead neurons to be eliminated quickly and efficiently.

In this fourth edition of the recognitions, Ikerbasque has carried out a bibliometric analysis of the data on scientific production and the latest contributions by female researchers from the Basque Country.

The Minister of Education and President of Ikerbasque presents the awards on September 28 in Bilbao.
